SARAH (PHILLIPS) LILLY
BRAND MANAGER - SC JOHNSON COMPANY
How did the Wisconsin MBA shape your transition to the private sector?
“The University of Wisconsin really set me up for success when it came to my summer internship. There were some nerves about going into a field I had no background in, but the program tailored the first year to cover all the fundamental skills you need to know to be successful in business, as well as in-depth classes for specialization. This knowledge, paired with the leadership skills I gained in the military, became a powerful asset in my internship. The summer flew by and it was an amazing time to work on global brands. I helped make impactful decisions on multi-million dollar brands, as well as having a great time with the company.”

Why an MBA?
“As a veteran, I knew that my work experience and leadership skills would be coveted by today’s top companies. However, I also know when that a military background is blended with an MBA would help me get on a trajectory towards the highest levels of leadership in corporate America.”
Why a Wisconsin?
“The more I learned about Wisconsin, the more I saw an ideal fit. The admissions officer I met at a college fair really sold me on the specialization model here. I actually dropped another school in my application set to add Wisconsin. I liked what I heard about the collaborative environment, which is even more collaborative than I expected, in part due to our small class sizes. At larger schools you’re competing for every job out there, but here, with the specialized program, we know exactly what everyone in the program is looking for and we help each other get there.”

WILL BISHOP
DIRECTOR - KPMG
Why an MBA?
“Coming out of the Army, I realized that I had a lot of marketable leadership experience, but felt like I needed to build up my business acumen to get the career I wanted. Earning a top-ranked degree like the Wisconsin MBA is a great way to expand my skills and a fantastic jumping-off point for a civilian career.”
Why Wisconsin?
“The format of the Wisconsin MBA allowed me to specialize my education in finance from the outset. Starting my first semester, I was able pick classes that catered to my professional goals. Wisconsin’s small class sizes are also extremely beneficial. Unlike at some schools, I had unrestricted access to alumni and industry experts who were instrumental in helping me with my job search. I’ve always felt like I was a part of a community and that my peers, faculty, and staff truly care about me and my success.”

Why an MBA?
“When I left the Air Force, I needed a way to connect my military experience to the marketing career I wanted. Through my research of different types of master’s programs, it became clear that an MBA would help me achieve my professional goals.”
Why Wisconsin?
“I chose Wisconsin because of the focused curriculum in brand and product management. It was clear early on that the Wisconsin MBA is a high-touch program, where faculty and staff are accessible and dedicated to your success. They’ve taken the time to understand what my goals are and have helped me connect with industry leaders who have provided me with learning opportunities in and outside of the classroom. I wanted a school where my specific goals could be achieved and where my experience was valued, and Wisconsin has given me that.”
