Why did you pursue an MBA during your military service?
“I launched Troopster while serving in the U.S. Navy. After the first few years in business, I decided it would be beneficial to go back to school for my MBA to enhance my business acumen and to better support business operations for Troopster. The MBA program at William & Mary far exceeded my expectations. I learned so much about every aspect of running, operating, and growing a business in today's world.”
What parts of the Mason MBA program did you enjoy most and why?
“The outstanding faculty at Mason truly set the program apart. The professors not only delivered a cutting-edge, practical curriculum but brought it to life through their exceptional teaching and real-world expertise. That, in addition to the collaborative atmosphere they fostered, combined with hands-on learning experiences and diverse perspectives from my fellow classmates, created an incredibly rich learning environment that directly benefited my growth as an entrepreneur.”
How has the Mason MBA helped in your career path?
"My Mason MBA has been instrumental in growing Troopster. Within the first year of my being in the Executive MBA program, Troopster doubled our impact thanks to what I learned from the course work. The strategic thinking, financial management, and marketing skills I gained directly contributed to our success, leading to our recent recognition as Entrepreneur of the Year at the inaugural U.S. Forces in Business Awards."

Why did you pursue an MBA during your military service?
“For me, pursuing an MBA during my military service was about timing, alignment with my personal goals, and finding the right program that fit my needs. I reached a point in my career where I wanted to broaden my perspective and develop skills that would complement my military experience. The timing was also ideal for my family, allowing me to focus on my education while still managing my professional and personal responsibilities. I chose the Raymond A. Mason School of Business because of its reputation for teaching excellence and its emphasis on students truly understanding the material and its application in the real world. I was confident that this program would equip me with the tools I needed to think critically and strategically in a way that would enhance my contributions to the Army and beyond.”
What parts of the Raymond A. Mason School of Business MBA program did you enjoy most and why?
"What I enjoyed most about the Mason MBA program was the broad exposure to multiple disciplines and the unique learning opportunities it offered. Coming from a military background, I wouldn’t ordinarily encounter fields like marketing or accounting in my day-to-day work. These courses not only expanded my knowledge but also deepened my appreciation for how different aspects of business, such as finance and marketing, interplay to influence management and operations. Another highlight was the access to the Executive Partners program. Being able to have candid conversations with seasoned professionals gave me invaluable insights into career development and allowed me to leverage their experience to chart my own path. The combination of diverse academic exposure and mentorship created a transformative experience that I’ll carry with me throughout my career.”
How was the Mason MBA helped in your career path?
"The Mason MBA has profoundly impacted my career, equipping me with tools and frameworks to approach problems with a broader and deeper perspective. It enhanced my ability to tackle complex issues and navigate uncertain situations using structured frameworks and methodologies I wouldn’t have had otherwise. Moreover, the program provided the time and intellectual space to reflect on my military career and think through where I wanted to take it into the future. This self-reflection ultimately led me to specialize in the data science field as an Operations Research/Systems Analysis officer. To further facilitate this pivot, I pursued a second master’s degree in business analytics independently from the military. The combined skills from both programs now influence my daily work as an ORSA, where I apply advanced analytical techniques to help Army senior leaders navigate difficult, multifaceted questions. Beyond that, my Mason MBA (and MSBA) experience also enabled me to take on the role of adjunct professor, through which I pay-it-forward by instructing the next generation of graduate-level business students while continuing my full-time military duties.”

Why did you pursue an MBA during your military service?
“I was selected for a three year position in the West Point (USMA) Admissions office, and a requirement was that I first obtain an MBA. As an active duty Army officer with no immediate plans to enter the private sector business world, I wasn’t initially sold on the value of an MBA until I found William & Mary. It was a place I immediately felt at home, wanted, valued, and where I knew I could contribute to the program in a meaningful way.”
What parts of the Mason MBA program did you enjoy most and why?
"I found a lot of value in the Executive Partner program and Field Consultancy course. The support, mock interviews, and mentorship provided by the executive partners was very useful as I transitioned to my role at West Point, where the Admissions officers really take on the role of interviewing and mentoring prospective candidates. The field consultancy was an unexpected opportunity to put the knowledge gained in my first three semesters to use; getting to solve real world problems for real companies really helped bring it all together.”
How has the Mason MBA helped in your career path?
"Dr. Ed Felton’s class on Ethics contributed most to my growth as an Army Officer and professional. Between the education I received at West Point and a decade of experience leading soldiers, including three+ years in combat, I came to William & Mary confident in my leadership abilities. The Ethics class really highlighted the inherent challenges and importance of making sound, ethical decisions in consideration of potential life and career implications. Personally, Dr. Felton taught me the importance of having and working in pursuit of a purpose in life and remained a mentor after I graduated."
