NICK HAGEN
Why did you pursue an MBA after the military?
“After the military, it was extremely important for me to have a structured, supportive, and collaborative environment to develop my business acumen while refining my leadership skills in search of a meaningful career. Pursuing an MBA gave me the most effective way to discover the types of opportunities out there and match it to the sense of purpose and service I still wanted to carry.”
Why did you choose the Kelley MBA specifically?
“Kelley was my top choice because of the people. My time in the military taught me that relationships matter, and everyone I met at Kelley embodied that sentiment. From staff to faculty, and even among my peers, I feel a deep sense of care and attention toward my success as a professional and individual. Everyone wants each other to succeed and will do what they need to help.”
What parts of the Kelley MBA program did you enjoy most and why?
“I can't express in adequate words how helpful and accessible the faculty are. When I'm stuck on a topic, or need help with a concept or framework, they pull out all the stops and bend over backward to find time to help. I've come so far in one short year because of their willingness to help me grow. Outside of class, the professional and social clubs are a fun and helpful distraction from the academic rigors and a great place to build your network of long-lasting friends.”

NICK McCLAIN
Why did you pursue an MBA after the military?
“My goal was to pivot into consulting, which would have been extremely difficult without attending an MBA program. I knew that the management, critical thinking, and high stress decision-making skills I developed as a Green Beret would translate into the business environment, but I lacked the business knowledge and network to break into the consulting industry. Ultimately, I decided an MBA would bridge this gap and provide the best opportunity to successfully transition from the Army.”
Why did you choose the Kelley MBA specifically?
“The main reason I chose Kelley was the academy structure, more specifically the Consulting Academy. The Consulting Academy was unique to Kelley and would provide the real-world experiences, skills, and baseline knowledge that would enable me to be successful as a consultant from day one. I also appreciated the faculty and students at Kelley who were beyond receptive and supportive as I was evaluating MBA programs.”
What parts of the Kelley MBA program did you enjoy most and why?
“Outside of the Consulting Academy, the aspect I enjoy most is that Bloomington and Kelley are extremely family friendly. I really enjoy bringing my wife and two boys to Kelley events ranging from football tailgates to IU basketball games. I also enjoy that the class size at Kelley is small enough that you know most of your classmates on a personal level and everyone is invested in your success.”

Why did you pursue an MBA after the military?
“After leaving the military I began putting the project management and team leadership skills that I learned in the military to use in industry. I realized after a few years that I wanted to do more than run the business, which is where your efforts are focused in operational roles. I wanted to move into a role where I would be responsible for driving or growing the business, and that led me back to pursue my MBA and career switch into a role in marketing.”
Why did you choose the Kelley MBA specifically?
“I knew I wanted to be in Marketing and Kelley has a great marketing program. I was also a career switcher, so the full-time program offered the best path for me to do that. I also was living and working in Bloomington, so I can't lie, the convenience of going to school without relocating was very appealing.”
What parts of the Kelley MBA program did you enjoy most and why?
“For programming, I loved the Consumer Marketing Academy and the Leadership Academy. CMA gave me a great foundation in marketing so I could hit the ground running in my internship and then in a full-time marketing role. Leadership Academy really changed how I thought about leadership and I incorporate the tools and strategies that are more focused on a coaching style now.”

Why did you pursue an MBA after the military?
“After a decade of deployments around the world, my wife and I decided that we needed to transition to a different lifestyle. At the time, I wasn’t confident or fully prepared to pursue a new career, especially with young children, and I believed that a full-time MBA experience would be the perfect transition. That said, I wouldn’t trade my amazing experience as a Green Beret for the world.”
Why did you choose the Kelley MBA specifically?
“I learned about the Kelley MBA through an acquaintance in the program. When I attended Experience Weekend, it validated many of his views about Kelley’s culture, academic experience, network, and potential to maneuver my way into sought-after careers. I committed that weekend.”
What parts of the Kelley MBA program did you enjoy most and why?
“A quality education is just one aspect of the Kelley experience. I had two years to focus on myself and my family, in a community that has a lot to offer a young family. The relationships I developed at Kelley have helped guide me and my family through some challenging and awesome times.”
